Temporary flood water storage in agricultural areas in the Middle Tisza river basin - Hungary

The increasing exposure to floods is a consequence of the river regulation and land reclamation works that shaped the landscape in the Tisza River floodplain. During the last 150 years an extensive flood defence and water management infrastructure has been constructed. Climate and land use change in the basin are increasing the frequency and magnitude of floods. The Hungarian Government has been pursuing a new flood defence strategy for the Tisza based on temporary reservoirs where peak flood-water can be released.

Infrastructure and economic incentives to reduce vulnerability to drought in Segura and Tagus basins

The Segura River Basin in the south east of Spain suffers from a structural condition of water scarcity and drought occurrence. For decades, the focus for dealing with this condition has been placed on instrumental objectives such as increasing water transfer facilities (i.e. Tagus Segura Water Transfer, a major diversion project), developing alternative sources (i.e. desalination and reuse) or making use of water in a more technically efficient way (i.e. irrigation modernization).

Room for the River Regge, Netherlands - restoring dynamics

The Regge River is a typical rain fed river. Starting in the 19th century the first bends were cut and over the years the Regge River was largely turned into a canal. In situations with heavy rainfall, large areas in the valley of the river are flooded. In dry periods, on the contrary, agriculture and the wetlands suffer from the lack of water. Because of climate change, precipitation is projected to become more extreme; showers heavier and dry spells more prolonged. Measures directed at restoring the dynamics of the river must also help to adapt to these projected changes.

 

Tamera water retention landscape to restore the water cycle and reduce vulnerability to droughts

Tamera, a farm of 154 ha, is located in the most arid region of Portugal (Alentejo). This area has shown significant trends of increasing erosion and desertification. Only a few decades ago, the Alentejo was a region where the streams flowed with water all year round, even in summer. Today the streams swell only during the rainy season and afterward they become dry again. The system has fallen completely out of balance and climate change is expected to exacerbate the situation.

Integrating climate change adaptation into coastal planning in Šibenik-Knin County (Croatia)

Šibenik-Knin County in Croatia has 960 km of coast and 285 islands and rocks. Its coastal zone consists of seven municipalities and three cities including Šibenik, the administrative centre. The Coastal Plan for the Šibenik-Knin County focuses on the impacts of climate change in the coastal zone and adaptation to projected changes. The Coastal Plan (at December 2014) is being prepared by the PAP/RAC (Priority Actions Programme/ Regional Activity Centre) in Split and the Plan Bleu: both are components of the UNEP Mediterranean Action Programme.

Agroforestry: agriculture of the future? The case of Montpellier

The agriculture sector in Montpellier is highly vulnerable to higher temperature and more frequent droughts associated with projected climate change. To prepare for the effects of climate change it is important that agriculture in Montpellier takes appropriate adaptation measures. The agricultural systems based on monoculture are deemed to be more vulnerable compared to alternatives such as the cultivation of a mixture of crops and species, especially a mixture of trees and crops as in agroforestry.

IRRINET: IT irrigation system for agricultural water management in Emilia-Romagna, Italy

IRRINET is an IT irrigation system aiming to advise farmers on efficient water management. This web service was developed with public funding by the CER (Canale Emiliano Romagnolo, a water consortium located in the Emilia-Romagna region) based on a 1984 project which tested the use of telematics tools in agriculture in Emilia-Romagna. In 1999, with the arrival of Internet, IRRINET started to be developed in a web form and is still active and operative in this Italian region.

Adaptation, restoration and creation of habitats for amphibians threatened by climate change in the Montes de Valsaín mountain range, Segovia

The project "Adaptation, restoration and habitat creation for amphibians threatened by climate change in the Valsaín Forestry, Segovia" was initiated with the aim of counteracting the global decline of amphibians, which are currently the most threatened group of vertebrates in the world. This project was specially designed to respond to the decline of more than a third of amphibian species, which are under some degree of threat due to habitat destruction, adverse climate change, emerging diseases, and the disappearance of critical breeding sites.

Sustainable forest management in Menorca in a context of climate change (LIFE BOSCOS-MENORCA)

The LIFE BOSCOS Menorca project, launched in January 2009 by the Island Council of Mallorca, had as its central objective the adaptation of Mediterranean forest ecosystems to the adverse impacts of climate change through sustainable forest management practices. This five-year project sought to directly address the challenges imposed by climate change in Menorca, an island that, due to its geography and climate, faced unique environmental risks that required specific adaptive solutions.

MEDACC: innovative methodologies for adaptation to climate change in the Mediterranean area

The LIFE MEDACC project aimed to develop innovative solutions to adapt our agroforestry and urban systems to the impacts of climate change in the Mediterranean. A series of adaptation measures in the fields of agriculture, forestry and water management were implemented on a pilot basis. The results of the project have contributed to quantify how adaptation can reduce the vulnerability of natural systems and human activities to climate change, and what are the economic and environmental costs associated with the implementation or non-implementation of these adaptation measures.
