River restoration and flood prevention: the case of the Órbigo River

Water and water resources

The project to improve the ecological condition of the Órbigo River, in its section in León, is an example of the integrated application of the Water Framework Directive and the Floods Directive. The works carried out by the Duero Hydrographic Confederation, as part of the National River Restoration Strategy, restore the river’s longitudinal and transversal capacity by recovering fluvial space and its functionality as a floodplain. This enhances the river's natural ability to dissipate floodwaters, reducing the risk of flood damage, while regenerating river habitats and laying the foundations for its self-ecological recovery through the reconnection of the river with its riparian areas.
