Spain and the Mediterranean—acknowledged climate hotspots in the EU and its borders—face intensifying warming, drought and biodiversity loss. From the Mediterranean to the Amazon, the urgency to advance science-policy-practice across government, academic and private sectors has never been clearer. With the EU’s announcing this November that it intends to use carbon trading under Article 6 to meet up to 5% of its 2040 target, the imperative to ensure it does not become another (carbon) market failure only becomes ever more important. Building off the recently released Principles for Responsible Engagement with Article 6, and the work of the Second Mediterranean Assessment Report (MAR2), coordinated by MedECC, this session examines:
Objectives
Understand the current challenges the Mediterranean region is facing and is likely to face in the future.
Understand the Structure and Goals of MAR2: Brief participants on the report’s organization, key themes, and its purpose in addressing climate and environmental challenges in the Mediterranean.
Highlight Key Scientific Advances and Gaps: Summarize major scientific progress since MAR1, and identify remaining knowledge gaps and research needs relevant to the region.
Bridge the gap between climate scientists and carbon markets, ensuring Article 6 carbon markets are informed by the best available science.
Unite independent academic and civil-society expertise to bring transparency, integrity and ambition in Article 6 through an Observatory.
Turn market trading to real mitigation with atmospheric impact that builds resilience.
