This side event seeks to contrast the different initiatives carried out at the ministerial level, from the culture departments of different member countries of the group of friends for climate action and cultural heritage (founded at COP28), in relation to the conservation and preservation of cultural heritage in the face of the climate crisis. Along with our planet, cultural heritage is in serious danger and, in turn, can help us seek inspiration for adaptive strategies, in addition to being able to join mitigation strategies through the just transition. However the role of heritage does not end here, it can also generate climate awareness through heritage education. This panel is also part of the strategy “road to mondiacult” the summit of all the ministers of culture of the UNESCO member states, that will be hosted in Barcelona in September 2025.

Objectives:

  • Discuss on the main impacts of Climate Change on our Cultural Heritage (tangible and intangible).
  • Share study cases of successful adaptation strategies based on cultural heritage.
  • How to design a methodology of sustainable management.
  • The implementation of Cultural Governance.
  • Show how by the strengthening of Cultural Heritage policies we can build more resiliente societies.
  • Link COP29 to UNESCO MONDIACULT 2025.
